Loloi Tanzania TN 02 Rug

Fall is officially upon us-which means we need to cozy up our homes.  This does not mean you have to have 'pumpkin spiced' everything everywhere. What it does mean, is bringing in styles that make you want to snuggle up to a warm fireplace and sip on whatever it is you like to sip on. Here, we want to introduce you to 3 rug styles that fit perfectly into fall- they are: Kilims, Oushaks & Beni Ourain – and each is fabulously intriguing in their own right.  Today, these styles are being reproduced in various regions and in various qualities-making them obtainable for everyone.

A Kilim (pronounced kee-LEEM) is a type of Flat woven rug, meaning they are very thin, have no pile and are reversible. These rugs are woven on a loom by passing a weft strand back and forth through the warp. As they are quite thin, I would definitely recommend a nice pad to add cushioning and keep from sliding underfoot.

Most commonly woven of 100% wool, they create a bohemian, organic ambiance by being light and airy on the floor. Traditionally they are woven in designs that lend themselves to Southwestern / Tribal Motifs, today they are popular in the latter and also Geometric, Modern and Casual designs. Another great thing to note is they are super affordable for those not looking to invest a lot - but are wanting to spice up their decor.

Oushaks (pronounced Ooh-Shak) are really all the rage right now. They are not refined or pretentious traditional rugs, but more inviting and easy on the eye. Originally reigning from Turkey, the style dates back to the 15th century. Usually seen in washed earth tones (think terracotta, golds, soft greens, soft blues and browns) the color palette and soft hand of Oushak rugs makes them absolutely irresistible. They are mellow in presence and can unite styles because they are not overbearing.

Oushak

While there are many Oushaks on Rug & Home’s website, it is worth shopping our brick and mortar stores for these, as we have an incredible selection of one of a kind pieces instock and the prices for the quality are outstanding. If you live too far, our design staff is happy to send you options via email. Please don't hesitate to contact us, as it really is a pleasure helping our customers find the perfect rug!

Our last featured style is Beni Ourain. With roots in the magical land of Morocco, these rugs are composed of archaic deigns and simple colors. They were originally created by untrained artisans using natural sheep’s wool and accented with irregular, linear designs, in mainly browns and charcoals.  The irregularity of the crisscross, zig zag or diamond motifs is perfect for the lover of raw imperfection. Today’s reproductions capture the minimalist vibe, they are slightly bohemian in personality and mesh beautifully with Mid Century Modern furniture. Here are some of our favorites!
